Bringing One Ocean Diving elite caliber to Florida

Our team has trained with One Ocean Diving off Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi—internationally recognized shark-diving experts known for their research and safety protocols. Inspired by the knowledge and encounter awareness gained through that training, we bring similar safety-focused principles to Florida. Our approach emphasizes respectful, science-informed shark encounters, practical safety awareness, and a strong commitment to marine conservation.

Marine Experts Leading Every Shark Encounter

Founded by Matthew Evans, ocean shark adventures was created to expand the reach of One Ocean Diving’s conservation mission to the East Coast.

Informed by One Ocean Diving, ocean shark adventures offers an immersive, science-based experience that connects guests with sharks through education, respect, and responsible marine tourism. What began as a research initiative has evolved into a trusted program that prioritizes safety, minimal disturbance, and meaningful contribution to shark conservation.

Science-Based, Non-Invasive Shark Tours

  • Our guided shark snorkel tours demonstrate why sharks are keystone species essential to healthy oceans.

  • Before entering the water, our marine biologists teach guests to identify shark species by unique markings and explain each species' crucial role in Florida’s marine ecosystems.

  • Guests learn to interpret shark behavior safely—reading body language, swimming patterns, and approach styles to recognize when a shark is curious, cautious, or comfortable.

  • These techniques are informed by decades of research and carried forward by our Florida team, who follow a respectful, non-invasive approach that treats sharks as intelligent, individual beings deserving of care and respect.

  • Each encounter is led by trained shark-safety experts and allows sharks to set the pace. Through this blend of science, experience, and respect, guests depart with both knowledge and a personal connection to the ocean’s most misunderstood species.

Frequently Asked Questions

🦈 When’s the Best Time to Come?

Sharks inhabit these waters throughout the entire year — every season brings something unique.

  • Spring–Summer (May–August): Typically calm conditions, warm water, and increased sightings of migratory pelagic species.
  • Winter (November–February): Ocean conditions can be windier, but it’s also prime time to encounter bull sharks and hammerheads.

No matter when you join us, you’ll have the chance to witness sharks behaving naturally in their own environment.

🌊 How Long Is the Trip?

Each experience lasts about three hours from start to finish:

  • 20–30 minutes boat ride to the site
  • 60 minutes observing sharks in the water
  • 20–30 minutes return to the harbor

Trip duration can vary slightly based on ocean conditions and shark activity levels.

📍 How Far Is It From Miami or Fort Lauderdale?

  • Miami: Approximately 2–3 hours (depending on traffic)
  • Fort Lauderdale: Around 1-1.5 hours

We recommend allowing a little extra travel time to ensure a smooth arrival at the dock.

🌦 What If the Weather Changes?

Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Our team continuously monitors marine conditions, and trips may be rescheduled for strong winds, storms, or hurricanes.

If conditions are deemed unsafe, you’ll always have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund — no worries, no hassles.

🦈 Is Shark Diving Safe?

Safety is always our highest priority. Each trip includes a trained shark safety divers in the water and a licensed captain on board. Our team follows proven safety protocols developed through One Ocean’s extensive research and experience. Every guide is highly trained in shark behavior and dedicated to ensuring both your safety and the sharks’ well-being throughout the entire encounter.

🌊 Do I Need Any Experience?

Not at all. Most of our participants are first-time shark divers. You’ll receive a thorough briefing, in-water guidance, and all necessary gear. Our team will walk you through everything — from entering the water calmly to maintaining proper positioning — so you can focus on learning and enjoying the experience.

🤿 Can I Freedive?

If you’re a competent swimmer or freediver, you’ll have the chance to dive below the surface under the supervision of our safety team. That said, you don’t need to dive to enjoy the experience — the sharks often cruise just below the surface, offering incredible views from above.

✋ Can I Touch the Sharks?

As these are wild animals, physical contact is generally not permitted. However, because sharks are apex predators within the ecosystem, there may be rare and specific circumstances where intervention is necessary for safety.

If a shark swims directly at you, you may need to respectfully redirect it. Ideally, you will use your fin tips first. If the shark passes your fins, be ready to swiftly push down on the top of its head (not the front of its nose, which can encourage the shark to open its mouth) and guide it off to the side of you or below you. This redirection should be non-disruptive and respectful of the shark’s natural behavior.

You should remain aware of your surroundings at all times and continuously look for any shark approaching your direction. Our safety divers are extensively trained and experienced in these techniques; however, in the event of a spontaneous, sudden, or rapid approach by multiple sharks, participants should also be respectfully prepared and knowledgeable about emergency redirection methods.

In extreme situations, the safety diver and/or the diver or customer may need to redirect a shark or reposition themselves to maintain safety. Your safety diver will review these methods with you in person during the boat ride out.

Do not chase sharks or attempt to force an interaction, as this may provoke a defensive response and could result in a serious or potentially fatal bite. This approach supports education, promotes mutual respect, and reinforces the importance of learning how humans and wildlife can safely coexist.

🦈 Will We See Sharks?

Yes — encounters are highly reliable. The sites we visit are natural gathering areas for local shark populations, and sightings occur on the vast majority of trips. While we’re working with wild animals and nothing in nature is ever 100% guaranteed, it’s very rare to complete a dive without sharks appearing. On the rare occasion that happens, we’ll happily offer a refund or reschedule.

🌊 How Do Sharks Behave Around People?

Sharks are intelligent, cautious, and curious animals. They don’t see humans as food — instead, they recognize us as fellow predators. When approached calmly and respectfully, most sharks keep a comfortable distance or make slow, investigative passes.

Each individual has its own personality, and behavior can vary depending on the species, environment, and mood of the day. Our guides are trained to interpret shark body language so you can safely observe and appreciate these animals in their natural element.

🦈 What Species Might We See?

The species vary by season, giving each time of year its own highlights:

  • Winter: Bull sharks, lemon sharks, hammerheads, and occasional tiger sharks
  • Spring–Summer: Silky, sandbar, dusky, Caribbean reef, bull, lemon, hammerhead, and oceanic blacktip sharks
  • Year-Round: Bull, lemon, and hammerhead sharks are our most consistent visitors

No matter the season, there’s always something incredible to see beneath the surface.

💭 Can Sharks Smell Menstruation?

This is one of the most common questions we get — and the short answer is no, it doesn’t make a difference. Sharks are tuned to detect the scent and vibrations of injured or struggling fish, not humans. Even when there’s fish blood in the water, it often takes effort to keep the sharks interested. So whether you’re menstruating or not, it won’t affect your safety or the likelihood of sharks approaching.

🧥 What Should I Wear?

We recommend dark, neutral colors that blend with the ocean — black, navy, or dark gray work best. A long-sleeve rash guard and gloves are required. If you have your own gear, feel free to bring it; otherwise, we’ll provide everything you need on board.

🎒 What Should I Bring?

We supply masks, fins, snorkels, and rash guards. You’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer using personal gear. Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, water, and your sense of adventure!

📸 When Will I Get My Photos and Videos?

Photo packages are typically delivered within 3–7 days after your dive, and video packages within 1–3 days. If you haven’t received them within 7 days, contact us and we’ll make sure your files are sent promptly.

🐠 Do You Use Bait or Chum?

Yes — in Florida, we use a light, controlled chumming process to attract the attention of nearby sharks that are already schooling in the immediate area. This is the most responsible practice for the use of chum in this region and is intended to create safer, more predictable encounters without conditioning the animals.

💵 How Do I Book a Trip?

You can book online anytime through our website or call us directly to reserve your spot. Full payment is required at the time of booking. If you need to cancel, please let us know at least 24 hours before your trip for a full refund.

👨‍👩‍👧 Guests & Participation

There’s no age limit, but for safety reasons, participants must be at least 4 feet tall and comfortable in the water with a mask and snorkel.

Non-swimmers are welcome too — you can stay on the boat and still get an amazing view of the sharks cruising below. Many guests choose this option and still have an unforgettable experience.
